Isla Navarino - Trek

4 day trekking

This southernmost trekking-tour on the edge of the world is an unusual experience that will fascinate all curious travellers. On this pioneer-adventure in the mountains of Dientes de Navarino you are captured right in the middle of Tierra del Fuego’s mystic beauty. Hike through wet swampland and quaint forests of beech trees before you finally reach the sharp teeth, los dientes, of Navarino Island. These natural jewels are embedded in small blue-lustrous lagoons. Moreover, you will hike through the southern end of the world to watch beavers building their dams. And you will resist the extremely strong gusts of wind that are arrestingly indicating the closeness to Cap Horn.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1
We travel with a Twin-Otter, two engine bushplane, to Puerto Williams where we start our expedition. Puerto Williams (2,300 inhabitants) is the southernmost settlement north of the Antarctic. In the afternoon we hike through a deep forest of beech trees and swampland uphill to Laguna Salto (480m). We set up our tents close to the Laguna where we spend our first night. (-/L/D)

Day 2
Today we hike over the Paso Primero to the Mirador de los Dientes. We enjoy a picturesque view over the Dientes Mountain range with its blue lagoons. Afterwards, we hike further over terrain that might be partly snow covered to reach the Paso Australia (805m). On our way to the next camp we discover small lagoons, dams of beavers and sharp rising mountains until we arrive at our next campsite which is located at the edge of Bettinelli Mountain. (B/L/D)

Day 3
Today we ascend in direction to Monte Bettinelli and cross the Paso Austria. We move towards the valley where we can observe beaver marked forests and dams. With a bit of luck we have the chance to watch one of these busy animals during its work. We hike over the Paso Alinghi through a mostly swampy territory back to Puerto Williams. We spend the night in a guesthouse. (B/L/D)

Day 4
We travel back with the Twin-Otter over the Darwin Mountain range to Punta Arenas. (B/-/-)
