Here you find important information on the town Puerto Natales! With its 19.000 inhabitants, the little seaport Puerto Natales is situated about 250 km northwest of Punta Arenas and directly at the Seno Ultima Esperanza. Puerto Natales was found in 1911 and is today the capital of both the commune of the same name and the Última Esperanza Province. Sheep farming and fishing were the main industries for a long time. It was during the past few years that hiking fans discovered the lovely little town and its geographical advantage at the gates to the famous National Park Torres del Paine.. ARRIVAL Bus Coming from Puerto Montt, you travel overland, cross-Argentina by bus directly to Punta Arenas (i.e. Bus Cruz del Sur, Pullmann). Travel time approx. 35 hours. From there, you take one of the many busses that are leaving daily to Puerto Natales (Buses Fernandez, Bus Paceco) From Calafate (Argentina), several busses depart daily for their 4 hours trip to Puerto Natales (i.e. Bus Zaahj, Cootra) From Punta Arenas, several public busses depart daily to Puerto Natales (Buses Fernandez, Bus Pacheco) Boat Every Monday (please check schedule), the NAVIMAG (freight & persons vessel) leaves Puerto Montt to reach Puerto Natales three days later, Thursday the same week. Car Coming from Punta Arenas take Ruta 9 to Puerto Natales. From El Calafate (Argentina) take RN 40 to Puerto Natales. POINTS of INTEREST / MAIN ATTRACTIONS Nacional O’ Higgins Boats Tour: Day trip by boat through the Ultima Esperanza Fiord to the Serrano and Balmaceda Glacier. Stopover on a typical ranch (estancia). Departure: Daily at 8 am For tickets contact: Turismo 21 de Mayo (phone: 061 411 978, www.Turismo21demayo.cl, address: Eberhard 560) Cueva del Milodón: Visit this impressive and approx. 30m high structure; in the 1890s, the German Hermann Eberhard found the skin and excrement of a milodon (zool.: sloth) close to the cave. This mammal must have used the caves as refuges more than 12 thousand years ago and it had a height of about 4 m. Most local tourist offices offer trips to the cave and charge an extra admission for the caves of approx. 6 USD. If you want to save money here, the caves can be reached easily by taxi. Mirador Dorotea: Magnificent viewpoint (600m) that is situated about 11km from Puerto Natales (Direction Punta Arenas). You can reach this viewpoint by foot in two hours; start hiking at Ruta 9 where you have to pay an admittance fee of 6 USD. Museo Municipal: Museum displaying artifacts of the regions history. |
